Kraków city break from Scotland
Poland's old royal capital is the easiest introduction to the country — and small enough that a long weekend doesn't feel like a compromise.

Kraków survived the war largely intact, which is why it looks the way it does: a medieval core, one of the largest market squares in Europe, and a castle on a hill above the river. Everything inside the old walls is walkable in twenty minutes, so a two-night trip actually sees the city rather than the taxi ranks.
What I add is sequencing and bookings. Auschwitz-Birkenau tickets sell out weeks ahead in summer; the salt mine is best first thing; the good restaurants off the square need a table reserved. I plan the days around your inbound and outbound flight times, so you're not losing half a morning to a transfer that could have been avoided.
Kraków also works as a base. Zakopane and the Tatra mountains are two hours south, and Katowice and the Silesian industrial museums are about ninety minutes west — both easy additions if you have a fourth day.

A sample route
Day 1 — arrival and the Old Town
Morning flight, transfer into the centre in about 30 minutes, then a slow loop of the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall and St Mary's Basilica. Dinner in a cellar restaurant off the square, and a walk up to Wawel Hill after dark when the crowds are gone.
Day 2 — Kazimierz and the river
The former Jewish quarter in the morning: synagogues, the Galicia museum, and the food stalls at Plac Nowy. Afternoon along the Vistula, then the evening in Kazimierz's bars, which are the best in the city and cost a fraction of Edinburgh prices.
Day 3 — a half day out, then home
Either Auschwitz-Birkenau (a sobering three-hour visit plus travel, booked in advance) or the Wieliczka salt mine if you're travelling with children. Back into town for a late lunch before the evening flight.
